The keen eyed among you may have noticed some changes to the Gender and COVID-19 site. Our focus countries have expanded. We are now featuring research in Myanmar, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea.
These countries are all part of a pilot study that is being led by Griffith University, and funded by the Australian Centre for International Agriculture Research (ACIAR). It is titled ‘COVID-19 Gendered Risks, Impact and Response in the Indo-Pacific’.
What will the project do?
In a recent article in The Interpreter the research team explained:
“In each country, farming and social protection policies have been adopted in response to the COVID-19 crisis. As yet, we have little understanding of how these policies affected the daily experiences and decision-making of women farmers and women food producers during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The onset and pace of COVID-19 outbreak, the lockdowns and the restrictions were experienced differently across Myanmar, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. This project will record the experiences of women farmers and women food producers during the first year of the COVID-19 crisis and ask them what can be done to support their hard work to ensure their communities are economically and food secure.”
The project has two main aims:
- To identify and understand the specific gendered impacts of COVID-19 response on food security and socio-economic outcomes for women across three countries
- To utilise insights from the research to outline opportunities and design approaches that will begin to mitigate the harm caused by the COVID-19 disruption at the individual, household, and community level.
The research is mixed method and will be conducted through surveys and ‘deep dive’ field work consultations with women-led partner team investigators in each country.

‘COVID-19 Gendered Risks, Impact and Response in the Indo-Pacific’ will collaborate with the Gender and COVID-19 Working Group to produce analysis that compares the gendered impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, develop reliable estimates of food insecurity and, identify necessary steps to develop gender responsive economic recovery packages.
